Lotuscript tip that came in handy today

From SearchDomino.com, I got a handy tip that worked well for me today. Credit goes to Amith Narera who posted this:"Dynamically update Lotus Notes rich-text fields using LotusScript". This tip will update a rich-text item (like an attachment) in the front end document and you can see it immediately. Sweet!
I had a need to grab a MS Word document from my database, write some Notes data to it and attach it back to a document. Now, with this code, the user will see the attachment immediately. Rock on! They'll be sooooo happy. :)

Check it out the dynamic update code here

Send me an email if the rest of my code interests you. :)

How to keep a document locked in Lotus Notes

I've been struggling for weeks to understand why some documents will not unlock when a user closes a document. We know the user has closed the doc and gone home for the day but the document still shows locked and no one can edit the document. It's one of those issues where you'd like to record the user's every move. Last week, a user called me and gave me some insight while I interregated them. They open the database and a tab appears for the opened database. They edit the document. Somewhere in the fog of work, they close the tab that appeared when they opened the database and the edit document tab is still open. Now, they open the database again from their workspace and edit the document again. Would you believe the client opens up another tab with the document in edit mode? Now they have the document in edit mode in two tabs. They can create a save conflict now and after they close both documents, the document continues to be locked. One of my databases has this occur a couple times every day. I've got to believe this is not the only way to achieve this issue but another user today told me that this happened to them too.
If anyone else knows of any record locking issues, please enlighten me. Cheers.

What an amazing Lotus Domino site! IdeaJam.net officially releases.

Bruce, Matt and Sean really make the Lotus Domino community proud. The IdeaJam.net site is amazing. First, it's an awesome way to generate ideas for improvement. Next, the UI of this site is cool. Also, the list of features in this site is mind blowing especially considering the short time spent in development.
From the press release:

"Idea Jam includes many features that make the site easy and fun to use:
• Tags – All ideas are “tagged” with at least one or more tags. Users can then use tag clouds to see which tags are popular.
• RSS – Idea Jam makes extensive use of RSS feeds including feeds for idea spaces, a specific idea, a user or for any given
tag.
• User Profiles – Users can view their own ideas, their comments, and the ideas they voted on.
• Views – Ideas can be viewed by popularity, most recent, most comments, recent comments and more. Each view also has
an associated RSS feed.
• Unvoted – Users can easily review ideas that they have not voted on in each Idea Space.
• Random – Users can be presented with a random idea for their collaboration and input.
• What’s Hot - See which ideas were most active today, over the last seven days and over the last twenty eight days."

I'd like to see a session on the creation of this site at Lotusphere.

Great job men!

Bummer, was looking forward to the sandals at Lotusphere

We got a notice that there will be no sandal giveaway at Lotusphere. This got me to thinking of the top 5 freebies at Lotusphere last year.

1. I followed the TLCC vendor around on Wed. of the conference wearing they're tshirt. It took some groveling but I did win the first USB 1GB drive. It's got plenty of use this year. I did buy they're cert update course. :)

2. Sandals from Ascent. (I believe that was the vendor. They're put away for the winter) Hope a vendor has them again this year.

3. Unofficial Lotusphere tshirt is always my favorite shirt to get. I love to collect tshirts at the conference but this one's the most creative.

4. USB desk light scored at the IBM usability labs.

5. In ear headphones. Kitty and Warren shared with me. They score a huge bag of goodies and shared with us.

ARod back from the dead?

From Alex Rodriguez web site "After spending time with Cynthia and my family over these last few weeks, it became clear to me that I needed to make an attempt to engage the Yankees regarding my future with the organization.

Prior to entering into serious negotiations with other clubs, I wanted the opportunity to share my thoughts directly with Yankees' ownership. We know there are other opportunities for us, but Cynthia and I have a foundation with the club that has brought us comfort, stability and happiness.

As a result, I reached out to the Yankees through mutual friends and conveyed that message. I also understand that I had to respond to certain Yankees concerns, and I was receptive and understanding of that situation.

Cynthia and I have since spoken directly with the Steinbrenner family. During these healthy discussions, both sides were able to share honest feelings and hopes with one another, and we expect to continue this dialogue with the Yankees over the next few days."

I'm ready to forgive ARod for his arrogance displayed in the last few weeks. The reported $290 million, 10 year deal is still a bit obnoxious to me. It seems to me that his agent did not represent Arod well in this situation. I still think Alex should accept a lower than market salary and win the admiration of the fans. Once the Yankees sign Posada and Rivera, the next thing is to fix the starting pitching rotation. As it stands now, the Red Sox are going to be better than they were last year. They have great pitching, good veterans and young players with a year's confidence. Yankees need Santana to compete next year!

SalesForce.com beginner

I'm expanding my knowledge into SalesForce.com. It's an interesting platform. "The Force.com platform provides a complete application development platform as service, for building and deploying business applications on demand and without software." I've watched the video and I'm half way through the book, "Creating On-Demand Applications". I see many similarities with Lotus Domino. The security model, formula language and script language support are some of them. Their script language, APEX, looks more like JAVA in it's form and it's object-orientated. So far, the book is very easy to follow and a fun step-by-step introduction.

Flights booked for Lotusphere

We booked our flights for Lotusphere 08 yesterday. Just in time, it seems flights are selling out and today the flights are gone for the day we want to leave. Lotusphere falls on Martin Luther King weekend. We're flying down at 7am on Jan 17th. We'll arrive at 10 am and should be in parks by noon. I see around the Blogosphere that speakers are getting their submissions approved/rejected. With hotels and flights booked already, this year could sell out just like the old days. Exciting times indeed! Can't wait to see everyone.

Safari 3 Beta is FAST

I noticed the Safari 3 download available and thought I'd give it a shot. I generally use FireFox on my iMAC but my wife uses Safari. I've only been using it for a few minutes but the speed of pages loading is awesome. Not sure what they did to make it fast(as they claim 2x faster on the download page). It's lightning fast so far.
Go get it as it's an easy download and available for PC now too.
